Effective Treatments for Endometriosis Infertility

Considered as one of the major causes of infertility in women, endometriosis is the growth or swelling of endometrial tissues outside the uterus. It is estimated that almost half of infertile women have endometriosis. But women who still weren’t successful with pregnancy after taking a series of medications may choose to undergo assisted conception methods, such as intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization and gamete intrafallopian transfer.
Intrauterine insemination, which is also known as artificial insemination, refers to surgically placing a sperm into the uterus of a woman using a thin flexible tube called catheter. The tube that contains the sperm is passed through the vagina, the cervix and into the uterus. On the other hand, in vitro fertilization or IVFis the process by which an egg is taken out of the uterus and is fertilized with a donor sperm in the laboratory. After a successful fertilization, the resulting embryo is taken back to the uterus and is left to develop and grow. Meanwhile, the gamete intrafallopian transfer is done by surgically placing eggs and sperm inside the fallopian tube to induce fertilization. This, however, is applicable only to those with healthy fallopian tubes.
With all the available treatments for endometriosis infertility, women won’t have to worry much about not getting pregnant. All the prescription medications and assisted conception methods are proven effective in helping infertile women conceive a child. However, the fact remains that successful pregnancy really depends on the severity of endometriosis; with low successful pregnancy rate common to women with severe endometriosis. Also, the success of the treatment strongly depends on the woman’s age.
